Three ways to initiate a leadership project that gets noticed

Initiating a challenging assignment is the key to setting yourself apart in a competitive business environment. Taking the lead on difficult tasks demonstrates a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. These are qualities senior leadership actively seeks when deciding who to promote.

When I was climbing the corporate ladder, I raised my hand (albeit with some trepidation) to take on projects others avoided. But here's the curious part: At the time, I didn't realize this was actually "a strategy." 

It was only later on in my career that I gave my younger self a pat on the back for recognizing it was integral to my path forward.

Each challenging assignment I undertook and successfully completed enhanced my professional reputation and positioned me as a natural successor when the top job came open.
